Join area naturalists, biologists and birding enthusiasts to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day, May 12th with a weekend of events.  All of these unique events are for both new birders and long time birding fans. 

We have an entire weekend dedicated to our avian friends combined with great hiking through the most scenic part of Ohio.

9 PM - Owl Prowl - Hocking Hills State Park, Conkle’s Hollow

Meet the Hocking Hills State Park Naturalist, Pat Quackenbush, in the Conkle’s Hollow parking area to discover, look at and listen for these nocturnal avian hunters.  For more information call (740) 385-8003.

9 AM – Spring Migration Bird Walk at Lake Hope State Park Join the Lake Hope State Park Naturalist, Dave Sapienza, on a premier hike through the Lake Hope region.  Discover birds from the ridgetops to the lakeshore.  For more information call (740) 596-3030. 

 

9 AM - Birding Canoe Float Down the Hocking River - Join the Hocking Hills Canoe Livery and Hocking Hills State Park Naturalist, Pat Quackenbush, for a float down the Hocking River.  To make reservations (special birding trail price of $20) and more information call (740) 385-0523.  Canoe float is weather-dependant and requires a minimum number of participants…so please call ahead.

 
1:00 PM Saturday Birders Reception at Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center     

Join with members of the Hocking Valley Birding Trail to explore, plan future birding outings and get tips for your next birding excursion.

Many of the local birding locations will be on hand to answer any questions and offer help with your next outing. Talks and demonstrations throughout the afternoon will include such programs as “Bird Feeding and Food Preferences”, “Hand Feeding Hummingbirds”, “Woodpeckers of the Hocking Valley”, “Bird Photography with ODNR photographer Mike Williams”, Waterfowl ID … and much more!!

7 PM – Raptors at Rocky Outdoor Gear Store  - Join the Hocking Hills State Park Naturalist, Pat Quackenbush, at the Boot Factory Grill for a live closer look at a few of the region’s hunters from the sky. Located on St Rt. 33 in Nelsonville and for more information call (740) 385-8003

8 AM – Warblers & Wildflowers at Wahkeena Nature Preserve Meet with Wahkeena Nature Preserve Manager,  Tom Shisler, to discover the unique diversity of Wahkeena.  Admission: $3 per person, OHS members free and for more information call 1-800-297-1883.

 

8:00 A.M.  Wildcat Hollow Warbler Watch - Join Wayne National Forest wildlife biologist, Lynda Andrews, for a walk at one of the Forest's most popular hiking trails to observe and identify spring warblers.  Appropriate footwear is a must.  Meet in the trailhead parking area.  For more information call 740/753-0550.

 

2:00 PM – Turkey Tracking at Waterloo Wildlife Station – Join with Waterloo Wildlife Area Manager, Dave Swanson, and see how transmitters and receiving equipment are used by biologists to collect information on survival, cause of death, and reproductive success on a variety of wildlife species, including the wild turkey.
